Urmia University of Medical Sciences

Urmia University of Medical Sciences is a prestigious higher education institution located in Urmia, Iran. The university has a long history dating back to 1878 when Joseph Cochran founded the first medical college institution in the current location of the city campus. Cochran is credited with founding Iran’s “first contemporary medical college” and for improving the region’s infant mortality rate. The medical faculty was later joined by other physicians, including Drs. Wright, Homlz, van Nourdon, and Miller, who dedicated their lives to Urmia.


In 1980, the Faculty of Medical Science was established in Urmia University. In 1985, under the supervision of the Iranian Ministry of Health, the school detached from Urmia University and established a new university with the name Urmia University of Medical Science. Today, the university has seven schools, including Medicine, Pharmacy, Paramedical, Health, Nursing and Midwifery, Dentistry, and International Branch. Additionally, it administers all public hospitals in and around the city of Urmia, such as Imam Khomeini, Shahid Motahhari, Taleghani, Razi, and Seyyed ol Shohada University hospitals.


Urmia University of Medical Sciences is considered one of Iran’s top universities and has been awarded a “Grade A” status by the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Services. The university is committed to providing high-quality education and improving healthcare services in the region.
