Introduction:


We welcome you to Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences (KUMS), where we aim to provide the most up-to-date clinical and research information to improve the knowledge, skills, and attitudes of our participants. Our programs include a wide range of educational activities that focus on primary care and various specialties, such as gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, psychiatry, general surgery, anesthesiology, and emergency medicine, to enhance the professional performance of physicians and other healthcare professionals.


Our goal is to contribute to the continuing professional development of healthcare professionals and improve the quality of patient care through high-quality training. KUMS is committed to evaluating the effectiveness of our programs using qualitative and quantitative methods to ensure we meet our goals.


History:


Before the Islamic Revolution of Iran, there was no university or college of medical science in Kurdistan. In 1985, a research educational complex was established to provide undergraduate education in nursing and laboratory sciences. In 1986, the Nursing and Midwifery Faculty was formed to train students in nursing and midwifery associates. In 1989, the Kurdistan Medical School was established, and later in 1990, it was upgraded to Kurdistan University of Medical Sciences (KUMS). Currently, KUMS has five faculties of Medicine, Paramedical Sciences, Health, Dentistry, and Nursing and Midwifery. The university has 38 departments within the campus offering various courses, including B.Sc., B.E., Non-continuous B.Sc., M.Sc., M.Tech., M.D., Specialist, Subspecialist, PhD, PhD by Research, and Postdoc. There are 265 full-time faculty members, including Senior Professors, Associate Professors, Assist. Professors, and Lecturers in different disciplines. KUMS has more than 3000 students, and for the academic year 2019-2020, it admitted foreign students from Kurdistan Region of Iraq for Nursing (B.Sc.), General Physician (M.D.), and Dentistry (D.D.S.).

Our vision is to provide exemplary, cutting-edge educational opportunities to physicians and other healthcare professionals, teaching evidence-based practices, and identifying new and emerging healthcare needs and opportunities from research through delivery of care. We aim to significantly improve health through education.


Mission:


Our mission is to provide new knowledge and its application to various levels of healthcare, targeted educational activities to keep healthcare professionals’ knowledge and skills at the highest possible levels, and to partner with distinguished organizations and institutions to offer educational activities to regional, national, and international medical communities. We aim to increase our capabilities to understand and measure the needs of diverse audiences through increased research in educational needs and outcomes.
